Fighting Gravity: What Booster Pumps Are And How They Send Water Up Several Stories

Posted by on Jul 26, 2015 in Uncategorized |

If you are building a high-rise apartment building or just having the plumbing updated in a multi-story complex, you may be wondering how the water flow works. Because of gravity, water fights to flow downward, not upward. That is where commercial plumbing services introduce booster pumps. Booster pumps serve a very particular purpose. Booster Pumps Defined and Explained Booster pumps are water pumps that increase pressure in the plumbing lines and keep it moving upwards. Several booster pumps may be installed inside a high-rise apartment building in order to provide adequate fresh water to every apartment. The pumps are fully equipped with horsepower motors that need no cranking. The water pressure created by the booster pumps remains the same, whether it is on the ground floor or the twentieth floor. Variable vs. Constant Pressure Many booster pump manufacturers now offer variable pressure pumps. This is a good option for homeowners who only need increased water pressure on demand (e.g., in the shower, in the washer, in a dishwasher, etc.). However, in a building that is several stories tall, a variable pressure pump provides little benefit beyond energy efficiency and a slight decrease in water consumption (think of the “Seinfeld” epsiode with the low pressure shower heads and you get the idea). In order for water to move at a constant rate of pressure and remain consistent throughout the building, you need constant pressure booster pumps. Figuring out How Many Booster Pumps Your Building Will Need Commercial plumbers can look at the height of your building and automatically calculate the PSI at which water needs to move to escalate all the way to the top floor. Once they have the rate of pressure at which water must flow, then they can calculate the number of booster pumps it will take to create that pressure. It is a very complicated equation that involves the conversion of horsepower to PSI (pound-force per square inch). If your building is receiving a plumbing upgrade, a water pressure meter in the basement will already provide some of the information needed in the equation. Installing the Pumps and Checking the Pressure The commercial plumber will install the pumps by connecting them to the main water lines in the basement of your building. Some electrical wiring is necessary to power the motors, so your plumber will do this as well. The commercial booster pumps, which are quite large, will need several feet of clearance for installation. Once the pumps are finally installed, each pump has its own personal pressure gauge to let you know if a pump is failing or the pressure is not what it should be. If the initial pressure readings are lacking, your plumber will...

How To Keep Your Window Screens In Good Shape In Homes With Cats

Posted by on Jul 21, 2015 in Uncategorized |

While you may enjoy opening the windows at home to allow in a cool breeze, it could lead to damage to the window screens if you have cats. Luckily, with some preparations, you can prevent any damage to the screens and the need for repairs by focusing on a few key things. With the following tips, you’ll be able to maintain the condition of your window screens, even with cats that enjoy looking outside. Position Furniture Away from the Windows A good place to start if you want to keep your cats away from the windows is by positioning the furniture a good distance away. Positioning a sofa or table, for example, right next to the window can tempt your cat to climb up and become curious about scratching the screen. Install Screen Covers to Prevent Claw Marks The most effective way to prevent scratching to the window screens is by installing covers. These window guards can help add some extra protection to the screens themselves, but may not be as attractive or invisible as standard screens. Avoid Opening the Windows Entirely Only opening your windows a few inches can be a good way to ensure that your cats won’t get their claws on the screens. While you’ll be sacrificing some of the air flow that comes with fully opening the windows, no extra costs are involved and your window screens will still be protected. Dedicate Some Time for Deterrent Training While it may seem impossible to train cats, some effort towards teaching your cat to stay away from the windows can pay off. Having a spray bottle full of water handy as a deterrent and using treats to encourage your cat to stay away from the windows is doable. It can make a big difference in the likeliness of your cat doing any damage to the screens. Set Up a Few Windows Specifically for the Cats If you don’t want to buy window screen guards for the windows throughout your entire home, it can be a good idea to set up a few specific windows just for your cats to use. Some good ideas include setting up window perches on the windows you want them to use, along with making sure guards are in place to prevent claw marks. While replacing window screens can be affordable, it takes time and can be easily avoided even with cats around. By making a few changes to the window screens, you can make sure that your cats won’t damage them at all. If your cats do end up damaging your screens somehow, consider contacting a local professional for your window screen repair...

Answering A Couple Of Questions About Maintaining A Tile Floor

Posted by on Jul 10, 2015 in Uncategorized |

Tile flooring is a popular choice for many homeowners due to its beautiful appearance and durability. Unfortunately, these floors will eventually need to be cleaned to remove a variety of substances that can accumulate on them. Yet many new homeowners may not be sure of how to clean this type of flooring, and if you are one of these people, having the following questions about this task answered should help you to keep your tile flooring in excellent condition for years to come.  How Can You Remove Mildew From Your Tile Floor? Mildew is a common problem that can cause severe discoloration and foul odors if left unchecked. Luckily, removing mildew from your tile flooring is a relatively simple task, and you will likely be able to do this without needing to purchase special cleaning supplies. Vinegar is an excellent option for cleaning and sanitizing mildew. However, you should avoid applying the vinegar directly to the floor. If you apply the vinegar directly to the floor, it can cause small holes to form in the surface of the tile, which can allow moisture to seep into the tiles and cause cracking. You should mix the vinegar with water, and make sure that you thoroughly rinse and dry the floor.  What Can You Do To Remove Black Streaks From Shoes? Black streaks from shoes are another common problem that can strike your home, and these scuff marks can seem extremely difficult to remove. While they will not cause structural harm to your floor, they can severely degrade its appearance. Some homeowners will attempt to remove these marks through mopping, but this is unlikely to prove effective.  You can use a pencil eraser to remove these black streaks from your floor. You will need to rub the eraser along the entire length and width of the streaks. Unfortunately, if your floor has many of these scuff marks, this task will take a considerable amount of time to complete. To expedite this process, you can use a larger eraser. And due to the amount of labor required to remove these marks, you should always remove them as they happen to avoid having to spend an afternoon removing these marks.  If your home has tile flooring, it is important for you to know how to handle some of the more routine problems it will encounter. By knowing how to remove mildew and scuff marks, you will be in a better position to keep your floors looking beautiful, which can help improve the comfort inside your home as well as its resale value.  If your tile flooring needs extensive cleaning, contact a professional company, like All American Stone & Tile Care Inc., to come out and...
